California winds up...
Hey all - first off, thanks to all you folks that made it out to the shows so far! It has been a GREAT time. We've got 2 more shows left, and we're looking forward to 'em. The crowds have been great, and after some problems with shipping, we've gotten our christmas records out and available!
Our apologies to those of you at the first few shows. We intended on having them on the entire run. The album officially releases next week!!!
Here's a shot from the House Of Blues in Anaheim. Rock was brought. And lots of audience enthusiasm, too.
So, there's been some fun video taken on this trip, as well. Stay tuned for some of that. California adventures. Lots of In and Out Burgers. Lots of tummy trouble after that. Lots of jogging the next morning.

House Of Blues, Christmas Songs, Burgers, and Boba
You guys rocked the house of blues! Thank you for performing the Christmas Songs for the first time. I took home the Christmas Songs CD (along with the autographed snare drumhead). I got to listen to it on my iPod today at work, and I loved it. When I reached to the song "In the Bleak Midwinter," I was getting teary eyed. It was beautifully done. Yep, In-N-Out, great burgers! How do you guys order your burgers anyway? Animal style? 4x4? Actually, did you get any boba tea while you guys were here?

I was at the HOB Anaheim show, too, and it was the first time our party of three saw JOC in person. To describe it as one of the best concerts I ever attended seems a mundane understatement. Imagine the most satisfying musical experience you ever had and add the Holy Spirit. I was at two shows in similarly intimate settings back in the 1990s -- Barenaked Ladies and the Beautiful South -- that were nearly as spell-binding and well-executed, but just reminiscing about the live performance of "Oh My God" induces chills.
Bluestar, the two covers I recall were "Baker Street" (Gerry Rafferty) and "Don't Change" (INXS). The one song I wish they had performed -- but didn't -- is "Crazy Times." No complaints, though, none at all. :)

Would you like an intro?
I'm a fellow JOC fan who's still exploring the band's terrific music. If you don't know where to start, here are a few suggestions.
If you want to get up to speed with the band's latest work, run, don't walk, to the nearest music store and grab a copy of Good Monsters. This dark album is their best work yet. Its lyrics are incredibly raw, yet artful. Its musical textures move from wild, heavy, electric guitar-based cries for help; to quiet, moving observation of the world; to bloody honest prayers to God. Listen to it straight through in one sitting.
If you want to get a sense of where the band has been, see if you can find Much Afraid. Their self-titled debut album was a little lopsided - the massive orchestral rock of "Flood" and "Liquid" (produced by Adrian Belew of King Crimson) contended with the quiet, folky acoustic pop of the rest of the album, exemplified by "He," "Worlds Apart," and "Love Song for a Savior." Much Afraid sucessfully combined the two sound worlds, while the lyrics are more complex and self-consciously poetic. I have a special love for this album. The best songs are the anxious, electronic "Truce," the huge, driving "Fade to Grey," the wry, regretful "Five Candles," and the title track, which reminds me of the best acoustic songs of their debut.
If you want a good career overview, get The Essential Jars of Clay, available from Sony's Essential series. This two-disc set collects their best work and combines them with fine but hard-to-find songs like "New Math" and "Shipwrecked." If you want just one disc, reserve a copy of "Greatest Hits," which features a new song entitled "Love is the Protest." It sounds great from the thirty seconds I listened to on Amazon.com. ; )
By the way, If I Left the Zoo is an awesome album - my favs are "Goodbye, Goodnight" (those dance-of-death-before-Y2K lyrics and those creepy violins) and "Can't Erase It" (which reminds me of "Crazy Times," except it's wittier).
